A complete street for Main Street!

With only six councillors opposed, the Main Street Renewal proposal was approved on July 17 by Ottawa City Council.

The “complete street” design for Main Street will transform our community by reducing and slowing car traffic, providing safer and wider sidewalks for pedestrians, a safe cycle track for cyclists, and an improved streetscape for businesses and future development.

Now we move on to the detailed design discussion (e.g., Main-Riverdale, turning lanes, cyclist safety on Smyth-McIlraith Bridge) and we have related issues like undergrounding of hydro wires. Please continue to visit the website for more updates as the Main Street Renewal working group moves forward with providing input on the environmental assessment and design plans.

Thank you to everyone outside the Old Ottawa East community who supported a complete street for Main Street. And thank you to Councillor Chernushenko for providing great leadership at city council.

For more information about the complete street design, see the story below entitled, “Main Street Renewal goes to Council on July 17.” It has a link to city staff’s report.
