More spring clean up along the Rideau River – May 4, 10, 11, possibly May 17, 18

On Sunday May 4, Saturday May 10, Sunday May 11 and perhaps Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18, new trees and shrubs will be planted along the Rideau River Nature Trail, as well as spreading soil and mulch. University of Ottawa students will be helping with this project but more community support is greatly apprecaited, especially if you can provide wheel barrows, shovels, etc. Ian McRae has been working with the students and has purchased the plant materials and ordered the soil and mulch with money from a TD environmental leadership grant. If you can help, please contact Ian at 613-235-0096 or e-mail ian_mcrae@rogers.com.

The 14th annual Rideau River canoe clean up will be held on Saturday, May 10, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (water level and weather permitting). Once again we are calling on our neighbourhood canoeists and kayakers to help clean debris from both sides of the Rideau River between the Transitway Bridge and the Smyth Road Bridge. This year we will NOT be coordinating with the parks clean-up on May 3, since the river is still high.

Please bring your canoe if you have one, plus your life jacket, boots and work gloves to the Brantwood Park basketball court by 10:00 a.m. As usual, we will provide bags and “pickers.” Please confirm by end of day on Friday, May 9, if you are attending to ensure we have the appropriate number of canoes and partners. Contact Carol & Jim at 613 565-1963 or calette@bell.net.
