SLOE Rideau River Nature Trail proposal – 2024-DEC

Proposal: Enhance the riparian vegetation along the west bank of the Rideau River in OOE to protect the shoreline from erosion and maintain the beauty and biodiversity of the Rideau River Nature Trail.

Scope: Brantwood Park initially, with the potential to expand north and south in the future

Partners: Work with the City of Ottawa Parks and Forestry departments, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority and other local partners when possible.

I’ve looked through my files and found the following items that you may find helpful:

In 2016 I met with the SLOE group and a rep from the councillor’s office at the time to talk about planting and deterring geese.  I sent the attached plan (2016 doc). I believe areas were staked to prevent mowing but I have no record of any actual planting happening through our program-Although it’s possible the group obtained their own plants.

During that 2016  consultation, I was sent the remaining attached documents. I don’t believe RVCA was involved with these documents.

I have no database entries for the site so if we have ever supplied plants, it predated our program which started in 2010. I have a very vague memory of my predecessor saying she gave the group plants, but I may be incorrect.

We will be able to provide partial funding for plants (that we supply—we do not offer re-imbursement grants) and if assistance is needed from volunteers we can engage our City Stream Program.  2025 planting is possible, either spring or fall although we might be limited in what is available at that time- but definitely still a possibility.
